Seascope -Northern Ireland’s first ever Lobster and Marine Hatchery Research Centre is a marine research, education and visitor centre based in Kilkeel, County Down, Northern Ireland.
Our work is primarily based on the European Lobster as well as focusing on other marine species such as the Pacific Oyster and the Blue Mussel. The European Lobster
as well as the native and Pacific Oyster is of great importance both economically and socially. They generate a large amount of income for fishing communities in Northern Ireland.
Kilkeel is a thriving fishing community who rely heavily on the fishing industry for employment and keeping the harbour and community alive. Our hatchery will be focused on rearing lobsters from eggs to young adults. During this time we will be able to concentrate on research and looking into lobster rearing techniques as this is a very new and specialised field. We are delighted to be working with Professor Paulo Prodohl, head of genetics, who will be leading the research carried out at Seascope.
